Clean Room Labels: Defining Low-Particulate Labels

Clean room clean – It’s not your average level of tidiness; it’s an environment kept so clean that even particulate matter dancing on imperceptible wafts of air needs to be removed.

What we’re talking about, of course, is the clean room in your pharmacy. Keeping it in the right condition for compounding medications, sealing blister cards, applying labels, etc., requires a dedication to cleanliness that considers various factors, such as the air filtration system in the room, the type clothing pharmacists wear, the type of clean room labels pharmacists use, etc.

  1. Synthetic Stock

The facestock of a label receives the most friction after the label is applied, even if it only amounts to placing a labeled medication vial in a prescription bin or plastic bag. Having a face stock that’s purely synthetic or of a “synthetic nature” is preferred for keeping the clean room environment truly clean. Some facestock produces a high volume of particulates from small surface areas, and some produces none.

  1. Synthetic Liner

The liner sheets from which you take the labels should also have a synthetic composition. A non-synthetic, fibrous liner releases particulate matter at two main times: when the labels are peeled away, and when the liner is tossed in the recycling bin.

  1. Plastic Core

This consideration applies if you’re using clean room labels that come in a roll. At the center of the roll is often a core that supports the label liner as it’s pulled in a straight line. If the core is fibrous like the core of bathroom tissue, it could release loads of particulate matter every time more liner is pulled from the roll. When the core is made from a non-fibrous synthetic, such as plastic or rubber, virtually no particulate matter is released.
